Supreme Court: Talking About Freedoms

The topic I wanted to discuss today is the Supreme Court. I learned that the Supreme Court is the most powerful branch of government. There are nine judges on the Supreme Court. The nine judges of the Supreme Court are held to the highest esteemed positions of power. The Supreme Court videos we watched showed us that they are people just like us who make some of the hardest decisions known to man. I gained knowledge of how the Supreme Court justices face intense scrutiny.

For example, when the justices reach a majority decision, they must write an opinion that takes months to prepare. The judges also try to persuade their counterparts to change their opinions. The power that the Supreme Court holds is of great importance, which can also come with its own difficulties. An example of a complexity of the job is overturning one the oldest cases that affects the livelihood of others which is Roe v. Wade.

The most shocking piece I discovered was about the large number of cases the Supreme Court receives in a year. It was surprising because the number of cases were over seven thousand a year, with only one hundred being heard. The impact of a case that reaches the level of the Supreme Court, seems to have a macro level impact for United States citizens. I learned the Supreme Court is the way they are placed on a pedestal in high regards, which is a conduit to my last point that these decisions that have the ability to affect the lives of those around us for years to come and influence generations.

The weight of those decisions are hard to understand. I feel that the Supreme Court is one of the highest esteemed positions in the world and has lost some credibility. Roe v. Wade being overturned lead a level of mistrust of the people of the United States. The horrific part in all of this is that these judges hold the power in the palms of their hands and they are people just like the rest of us. We are different in the way that the choices we make only affect ourselves and sometimes those around us, while the Supreme Court's decisions affect us all in different ways.
